According to fastcompany.com: "Last year, U.S. consumers spent about $1 billion to buy about 2 billion lightbulbs--5.5 million every day."

According to wsj.com: "The U.S., which has four billion electric lights using [incandescent] bulbs, represents about a third of the world market."

So, about 12 billion bulbs, worldwide.

This just an example of how to answer this question:

1 in the porch outside the front door?

1 outside the back door or on the balcony if it's an apartment?

1 in the hall?

1 on the stairs? (Maybe, we don't know if there are any stairs, do we?)

1 in the kitchen?

1 in the bathroom?

1 in the bedroom?

1 in the study?

1 in the living room?

That's 9 so far. Let's double it to allow for table lamps, wall lights, etc. and add 2 for the spare ones in the kitchen cupboard!

Total: 20 light bulbs may be in the average American household

Anyone know for sure?

In the U.S. all home light bulbs use 120 volts constantly.

You may mean electrical power (watts) instead of voltage. If so, different light bulbs use different amounts of power. Typical general service incandescent light bulbs (ordinary old fashioned light bulbs) use about 1200 watts-hours (1.2 kilowatt hours) if burned all day and night. Twice that much for 100 watt bulbs. Compact fluorescent bulbs that produce a similar amount of light output use about 300 watts-hours (0.3 kilowatt hours) watts if burned all day and night.
