Juvenile rabbits can start eating leafy greens* about 12 weeks old. Offer in tiny portions, one at a time, and wait about a week before the next new one. Watch for diarrhea or other signs of poor health. Fruit** can be introduced in tiny portions at about 6 months.

Adult rabbits can eat leafy greens* every day (around 1-3 cups for a 5lb rabbit). Fruit** can be offered as a treat (a bite or two every couple of day), but they're not necessary.

*Leafy greens, i.e. dark lettuces, herbs, weeds, the tops from root veg.

**Carrot should be categorised as a fruit here, because it is so high in sugar.

When it comes to vegetables and rabbits, there are three categories of vegetables: ones that are safe to eat everyday in a "salad", ones that are only good as treats and should be limited, and ones that must be avoided entirely because they're dangerous.

It's important to research each and every vegetable before giving it to your rabbit so that you know if it's safe or not. Then, introduce new vegetables very gradually (starting with small portions and slowly increasing over a week or two), because your rabbit could have an intolerance or allergy.

See the related question below for more information about the rabbit diet.

Everyday "salad" vegetables are dark leafy greens like herbs (like basil), lettuces (like Romaine - the dark leaves only), weeds (like dandelion), and root tops (like carrot tops). It's good to serve from a wide variety and rotate often because relying on some of these vegetables too much can lead to illness.

Treat vegetables include carrot, squash, fruit, etc, and they should only be offered occasionally because too many treats can lead to illness in rabbits. The House Rabbit Society recommends no more than 2 tablespoons of treats per day for a healthy, normal 6 pound rabbit.

Dangerous vegetables include the tomato plant (the fruit itself is okay but all green parts are toxic) and many others. See the link below for a list of plants that are dangerous for rabbits.

Depends on the weight. 1 cup for every 3 pounds. So if a rabbit weighs 6 pounds, that's 2 cups of greens for him.

No more than 2 ounces per serving and should only be served at most 3 times a week. Otherwise they could get diarrhea and die. Should only be fed as a treat, not a staple.
