More than one English coin has what appears to be soldiers on them. Pennies issued before 1968 have an image of Britannia, somewhat the equivalent of Miss Liberty. Sovereigns carry a picture of St. George in full armor.

Assuming your coin is copper and about the size of a 1/2 dollar it is a penny (it does have a denomination - ??). An 1841 penny is worth roughly $4 to $25 depending on how worn it is.

You neglected to provide the coin's denomination, but it sounds as if you have an English penny. The "person" is the goddess Britannia, and the motto is found on ALL British Coins.

Assuming it's a 1d coin, current prices run around $8 retail in Fine condition.

You are probably referring to an 1845 British penny. It is copper, about 1.5 inches in diameter, and has an image of the young Queen Victoria (her hair up in a bun), the words "VICTORIA DEI GRATIA" ("Victoria, By the Grace of God" in Latin) and the date on one side and an image of Britannia seated with a shield and the words "BRITANNIA REG FID DEF" ("Queen of Britain and Defender of the Faith" in abbreviated Latin) on the other. According to the Standard Catalog of World Coins, it is worth about US$17 in Fine condition, about US$30 in Very Fine condition, about US$125 in Extremely Fine condition, and about US$300 in Uncirculated condition.

It appears that you are asking about either a florin or double florin from Great Britain.

The 1887 Florin (KM#762) is a coin worth two shillings (or 1/10 of a Pound) under the old £sd system. The coin weighs 11.3104 grams and is 92.5% silver, giving it an ASW (Actual Silver Weight) of 0.3364 troy ounces - it is roughly the size of a US half dollar. The "melt" value (as of March 22, 2011, with silver at $36.30 per troy ounce) is US$12.21. The front has an image of Queen Victoria with a small crown perched on her head and the words "VICTORIA DEI GRATIA" (Latin for "Victoria, By the Grace of God"). The back has an image of four crowned shields (representing England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales) with the date at the top (divided by the crown atop the upper shield) and the words "BRITT: REG: FID: DEF:" (abbreviated Latin for "Queen of Britain and Defender of the Faith") around them. According to the Standard Catalog of World Coins, an example is worth US$6.00 in Fine condition, US$10.00 in Very Fine condition, US$30.00 in Extremely Fine condition, and US$75.00 in Uncirculated condition.

The 1887 Double Florin (KM#763) is a coin worth four shillings (or 1/5 of a Pound) under the old £sd system. The coin weighs 22.6207 grams and is 92.5% silver, giving it an ASW of 0.6727 troy ounces - it is roughly the size of a US silver dollar. The "melt" value is US$24.42. ABout 483,000 such coins were produced in 1887. Except for its size, it is identical to the Florin. An example is worth US$16.00 in Fine condition, US$24.00 in Very Fine condition, US$50.00 in Extremely Fine condition, and US$85.00 in Uncirculated condition.

Such a coin does not exist.

Queen Victoria died in 1901. Any British coin dated 1941 will have George VI on the obverse.

The "soldier" on the reverse is the goddess Britannia who personifies Great Britain and has appeared on British coins for hundreds of years.

Depending on the year, your coin will be either a -

Penny - 30.81 to 34 mm in diameter.

Halfpenny - 26 to 28 mm in diameter.

Farthing - 20 to 22 mm in diameter.

The coin is most likely a British copper Penny, Halfpenny or a Farthing.

The bust of the woman would be that of a young Queen Victoria on the obverse, and the iconic figure of a seated Britannia with trident and shield on the reverse.

The Penny is 34mm in diameter.

The Halfpenny is 28mm in diameter.

The Farthing is 22mm in diameter.

In good condition the coins might get -

Penny £5 GBP.

Halfpenny £3 GBP.

Farthing £5 GBP.

It should be noted that there are variants of each of these coins which would increase the value if it turned to be one of the less common variants.

A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection and a positive identification of the coin.
