Becoming an airline transport pilot takes many years and a lot of money for schooling. You definitely have to "move up the seats". A career can be quite rewarding as you progress. Senior pilots, left seat captains, flying major routes for a major carrier, work about 40 hours per month and earn from $140,000 to $200,000 per year. There are few that make it this far as medical examinations are rigorous and often and many pilots can't make the grade. Also, there are lots of experienced military pilots up and coming that will work for far less. That being said, the low end commuter, prop driven jobs earn around $2,000 per month. Time, effort, good health and more ratings will certainly improve your salary
