This amount differs according to the engine size and the manufacturer's specifications. Motorcycle engines can take anywhere from less than a quart or a liter up to several quarts or liters of engine oil. Use the dipstick to measure the level of the engine oil, placing the bike vertically or having someone hold it in that position. The dipstick most often has a flat end with two lines marked on it. The lower mark shows the minimum amount of oil that should be in the crankcase, the upper limit is the maximum amount. If the oil level is at or below the minimum, then you should fill up with more oil. Use only JASO-MA or JASO MA2 approved motorcycle oil in order to prevent clutch slippage or damage. If you want to know how much oil to use in your bike, you can estimate this at the next oil change. Make sure the oil level is between the marks or at the upper mark. Then drain the oil off the bike. Measure the amount by using one quart or liter containers, you will quickly see how much oil is needed for the bike. Alternatively, fill up slowly, careful not to overfill, and measure constantly with the dipstick as you go along. In case of overfill, release some oil into a pan from the drain plug. Some big bikes have a sight glass, a little window that is used for inspecting the oil level instead of a dipstick. Be careful to fasten the drain plug securely after each oil change.
