I suggest you primer the fence first, then you may get by with 4 gal. , however most likely you will need 5. hope this will help.

Can you use exterior paint on fences?
Ive painted a lot of!!!!!! I recommend using black sote paint, because it water proofs and protects the wood very well! It can be bought at most any hardware store in 1 to 5 gallon buckets.Black sote is oil based ,and there is also white oil based paints as well.White latex paint don't preserve the wood as well and can also actually accelerate the deterioration of lumber. If you have panel fence or board fence with 6inch wide board you should use a 4inch brush with very thick bristles so it holds the paint well! be sure to stir the paint with something you don't mind ruining because sote paint is very hard to get off!!!!!!!!!! Paint the top of the post and all of the post you can see and down to about an inch from the ground! If you have facer bord in front of post which cover up the crack and nails that hold the boards on to the post i recommend you pant thows last!!!!!! Now when you paint the boards DO NOT PAINT THE BOTTOMS OF THE BORD because the bord needs to breath! Paint the top and both sides!!! When you paint the facer boards don't pant the bottoms of those either!!! Try to get in between the facer and the post as best as you can!!!! You should paint the fence when the wood is good and dry and it hasn't rained for a few days you don't want the wood wet or it wont hold the paint as well!!!!!!!!! and you want to make sure you paint on a day your really sure its not going to rain because the paint needs to dry a good 3 to 4 hours after you have put it on!!! Now to get the paint off!!! make sure you wear old clothing and shoes you don't care anything about because your going to get this stuff all over you!!! To take it off your skin you can use 70% or 90% rubbing alcohol or you can even use a lil gas if you can afford it!!! But either way you should use a dish soap something like joy is good to wash up after the gas or alcohol!!! If you get it on or in your car use finger nail polish remover and if its on the out side some thing but you should wash the spot with dish soap and water to keep the nail polish remover from messing up the paint on your car!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do you paint a wooden door with gloss paint?
1) Remove the door from its frame, take off the hinges, door handle, striker plate and all other hardware (deadbolts, peepholes etc.) 2) Place the door horizontally at a comfortable working height (sawhorses work well for this). 3) Remove any previous paint, either by sanding the surface with medium grit sandpaper followed by fine grit sandpaper or by scraping and then sanding. You do not have to get the surface to bare wood (or steel, but it must be smooth). 4) Check for and repair any cracks, or holes. Use a good quality wood filler on a solid or hollow core wooden door, and an epoxy based filler on a steel door. Be sure to sand the repaired areas well. 5) Apply a good quality primer/sealer to all surfaces of the door (don't forget the top, bottom and sides. This allows the finish coat to adhere to the surface of the door. Allow to dry completely. 6) Using a good quality brush, apply a top quality paint that is appropriate for the area (interior or exterior, latex or oil). Remember the higher the gloss factor the harder the paint. Use smooth, even brush strokes, and a thin coat of paint (it is better to apply two thin coats of paint than one thick coat of paint, particularly if the surface of the door is textured) To minimize visible brush stokes paint all corners, crevices, raised panels, as well as the top, bottom and sides, following the order listed below. For a raised panel door. - paint the outer edges (top bottom, and sides) - paint the beveled areas. Use a 1 1/2 inch sash brush is your best choice. - paint the panels of the door, using a 2 1/2 inch brush. - paint the rails -the horizontal flat sections of your door (usually, the top, middle and bottom of the door, however there are many models of raised panel doors with multiple rails). - paint the styles -the vertical flat areas of your door. Note* You can paint the panels, rails and styles with a roller, however a 2 1/3 inch brush works best for most people. For a slab door. - paint the outer edges (top bottom, and sides) - using a good quality roller with a low nap sleeve, roll a thin top coat over the entire surface (top to bottom is best as it gives you a longer, smoother stroke). 7) Allow the door to dry, sand lightly and wipe down with a tack cloth and repeat step 6. Leave the door to dry completely. 8) Turn the door over (use cloth or other soft surface to keep the first side from being scratched) and repeat steps 3 through 7 on the second side. 9) Replace the hardware (this is an excellent time to upgrade your hinges and handles if you so choose) and rehang your door.
