  • All cents were made of bronze, an alloy of 95% copper with tin and/or zinc.
  • Up till 1964 dimes, quarters, and half dollars were made of 90% silver and 10% copper.
  • Starting in 1965, dimes and quarters were made of copper-nickel, with no silver. Half dollars were made of 40% silver and 60% copper.
  • In 1971 half dollars were changed to the same copper-nickel composition as dimes and quarters.
