The first official United States flag came from a resolution of the Second Continental Congress on June 14th 1777, had 13 stars. However before this time the Grand Union Flag (Continental Colors) was used to represent the 13 Colonies, had 13 stripes and the British Union with no stars.

On January 1st, 1776 the continental army was reorgainised by congressional resolution under the command of George Washington.

They were laying siege to Boston that had been taken by the British Army. George Washington ordered the hoisting of the Grand Union Flag which was 13 horizontal stripes alternating red and white and a British Union Jack in the upper left corner. On July 14th 1777 the Continental Congress passed the 1st Flag Act. Again with 13 horizontal stripes alternating red and white and 13 stars on a blue background in the upper left corner.
