sun

The last answer is absolutely correct. However I'd like to add a that full sun means 6-8 hours or more. Depending on your climate there are a couple more items of interest to consider. Where I live in NC the climate in summer can be pretty gruesome on everything. A moist ground from yesterdays rain can be evaporated by the early afternoon, then by the time the evening sun (which here is pretty rough on roses) and can dry them out which I think causes stress to my roses. I try to place them where they have sun from sun rise through early evening, say around 3 or so which is about 7 hours direct sunlight. I have tested all shade and it doesn't work at all, they have to be in direct sunlight, however I have many which are out of the sun by 3PM and they perform as good if not better than my all day sunny plants.
