Probably for advertising/money. Google also sets out to control a YouTube user's account, asking each and every user on YouTube billions of times if they want a Google account. But, sooner or later, no Google account, no being able to come back to your account unless you give out your mobile number as well as any kinds of very personal information they want to take from you. Otherwise, you will be repeating trying to log in to your account with new 8 character passwords that will be determined "weak", "sloppy", "speaks badly about my mother" as well as cryptic code messages you have to decipher in a code box, like "type in the characters in the box", Ashvolkphukyourmoma. Stuff like that.

Google wants you to have an account for user protection purposes, but the truth is, your account's protection on YouTube is compromised IF you do not have a Google account. And IF you do not give out your personal information to Google. Nobody, not even your own children, depending to some YouTube videos for research, are safe from the perversion of Google's need to pry on personal information.

YouTube, started by Three PayPal guys, was purchased by G. in 2006! It's amazing that something that can start above a Pizza and a Japanese restaurant can grow into something worth so much money today!
