In 1971, a phenomenon called a 'gas war' used to happen occasionally. That
was a period of time when the filling stations in some area had a price war, each
trying to post the cheapest gas on their sign and bring people in.
I was commuting to college daily at the time, and I can confirm that 36 cents is
a reasonable figure for the average at that time, at least where I was living and
working.
But the reason I stopped in to add anther answer was to tell you that during the
'gas wars', I frequently bought gas for 19 cents a gallon. And for a time, the gas
wars were so common that I was able to commute between work and school 5 days
a week entirely on 19-cent gas.
