When it came out in 1980 it was $1.99, US currency price. It was cheaper because it was completely new and nobody knew about them. As it gradually became more popular, the price rose to what it is today, $10.

The 3x3x3 cubes can be bought at dollar stores ($1), at a bad quality (usually have tiles that have fallen off, don't turn easily, etc)

Stores such as Walmart(Canada, US) ($10)

Toy stores ($15)

or online for up to $20 generally. I've seen someone try to sell a customized one for $50 USD.
