AnswerIn a healthy average human, the kidneys are able to excrete approximately 1 liter of fluid per hour. However, stress (from prolonged physical exertion), as well as disease states, can greatly reduce this amount.

A good amount for people to drink depends on the person. Technically a person requires the same amount they lose throughout the day from excretion, perspiration and other forms of water removal. Which of course varies from person to person.

You would also have to consider the weight of the person, their metabolism, their general health, their amount of physical activity and much more.

If you begin having a mild headache, your urine becomes a darker yellow color, or if it has a strong odor; if you have constipation or if you begin to have general aches especially in the lower back, you may have mild dehydration and should definitely drink more water than you currently are.

In short, use common sense - if you're thirsty, drink some water. If you feel like drinking some water, drink. It won't kill you unless you try to consume a higher amount than your body can process.

The general recommendation is approximately 8-10 glasses of water a day, which is about 2 liters.

The latest dietary reference intake report by the United States National Research Council in general recommended (including food sources): 2.7 liters of water total for women and 3.7 liters for men. Also noted is that normally, about 20 percent of water intake comes from food, while the rest comes from drinking water and beverages.1

Your body needs fluids, but it can be difficult to know just how much water (or other fluids) your body needs. Your water requirements can change from day to day based on your physical activity, the weather and even your health condition. This calculator can help you decide how much water you need to drink today.
