It is an obligation on Muslims to pay 1/40 (2.5%) of the wealth which they have had for a full lunar year, 1/40 (2.5%) of goods used for trade, and 5% or 10% of certain type of harvests depending on irrigation. Exempt from Zakat are a person's house and personal transportation.

Zakat is not mandatory on harvest if the total did not reach the minimum limit (nisāb) of about 653 kilograms of crops[7], nor on gold amounts if the owner has less than 85 grams of gold or less than 595 grams of silver.[8]

There are several different types of charities. Some are compulsory

and some are voluntary.

The voluntary ones are lilah, which is, for example, giving money or

helping to build a mosque or Islamic schools.

Sadaqah is also voluntary. This is the giving of charity in Islam.

Sadaqah can be given in many forms it doesn't just have to be the gift

of money.

Zakah is a compulsory (charity) on every Muslim.

There are five pillars of Islam. The third pillar of Islam is zakah

this means, in Arabic, purification and Muslims believe that

giving zakah purifies their money and jewellery.

Zakah is to be paid once a year most Muslims give zakat in the month of ramdhan. by all wealthy Muslims at the rate of two and a half percent. Zakah should be paid on cash, bank savings and jewellery. Muslims also pay zakah on cattle. Paying zakah is for keeping our wealth clean of greed and selfishness. Muslims pay zakah

to gain Allah's good will.

Some Muslims believe that they themselves and their wealth belong to

Allah and they are just the keepers of the wealth. Through zakah

Muslims share their wealth with the poor. Money Muslims pay for zakah

is not something Allah needs, he is just checking whether you obey him

and give to the poor.

The table of zakah:

Amount of item

Rate of zakah

Agriculture produce

653kg per harvest

5% produce on irrigated land, 10% on produce for rain fed land

this is different in Shia islam and Sunni Islam and you should ask an Imamn of your Islam sect.

for example in Shia Islam 20% of income that is extra of yearly costs are needed to be donated as Khums.

Khums literally means one fifth.

some Islam sects say only if a Muslim find a treasury or booty in a war should donate its Khums.
