According to McDonald's Corporation 2008 annual report, they anticipate opening 1,000 new restaurants in 2009, and adding 200 McCafés (mainly in France and Germany), for a total of 1,200 new locations.
This works out to an average of 100 new restaurant openings per month, or one every 7.2 hours, worldwide. Of course, this is a confabulated schedule; McDonald's doesn't really open a new restaurant every 7.2 hours.
In addition to opening new restaurants, McDonald's also anticipates closing 750-850 old locations, so the net gain is only 350-450 stores.
At the end of 2008, there were 31,976 McDonald's in operation. The company owns only 20% of the total, or 6,502; the remaining 80%, or 25,474 restaurants, were owned by franchisees.

∙ 14y agoAccording to some research I've been doing these past few weeks: In 1998, Wal-Mart averaged a new store every three days. Since going global, I've read that they now average a new store opening every day. I am attempting to verify this, but have had no luck as of yet. May 26, 2009
