You can get a car/truck loan at the age of 18. Most people under 21 or with little or no credit will need a co-signer, this can be your parent(preferred), or an aunt, uncle, brother or sister. If none of the above are avail. or willing, the bank will, in some cases, let your employer or "best friend" co-sign, this can however cause trouble if you can't or don't make timely payments. hope this helps Tony

Is it possible to trade in a car and buy a new one even if you are still paying off a loan for the original car?

Yes. You have to make certain the dealership you're working with for the purchase of the new car is covering the entire amount owed on the old car. Also, whoever is doing your financing should give you a check made out to you and the lienholder of the old car so that loan can be paid off. If you do not do this, it is possible for the bank of the old car to come back to you and sue you for the loan balance. Keep copies of everything in a safe place. sunnyraye

If you want to sell a 3 year old car that you are still paying for versus trading in should you apply for a loan to pay off the car loan?

I wouldn't. Contact the bank who you have the loan with before you try selling the car so you can get all of the details about how to handle the pay-off when you sell it. Find out what car dealers don't want you to know at www.dealertricks.com

Should you use your home equity loan to pay off your car loan?

I would need more details but in general, the answer is no. If you don't pay your car loan, you lose the car. If you get a home equity loan and can't repay it, you lose the house - big difference.

If the title to a car is in your name but the name for the car loan is in someone elses name who has legal ownership?

If only your name is on the title and the loan is not listed as a lien on that title then you are the legal owner. If someone else obtained a car loan for you then their name should be on the title to the car with yours. The question of ownership should be addressed if someone was kind enough to borrow money for you to have a car. The car should have full insurance coverage in case of an accident.
