You had to travel in the back of the bus, some bars restaurants and hotels refused to serve you. your children were forced into schools that were segregated People in general were able to treat you in a discriminatory manner based on the fact that they had a problem with your colour or race. Many back people were assaulted and murdered for no other reason then their colour. In the time of slavery the only thing that the righteous Christian community could say to justify their attitude toward slaves was to put out a claim that dark people were in fact not human beings but cattle. many people went with this and to this day are still going with this attitude that there is something separate about black people. America "the land of the free" was the last European nation to abolish slavery and treated black Americans like subhumans even in the legislature until well into the 1960s.
