Christianity is said to have been founded in the first century CE. It grew slowly throughout the Roman Empire until, at the beginning of the 4th century, it probably involved around ten percent of the population.

At this point, Emperor Constantine gave the proto-Catholic-Orthodox branch of Christianity state patronage. This patronage made Christianity socially and politically desirable for some, and the religion grew quite rapidly. In the decade of the 380s, Christianity was made the state religion, and in 391 CE pagan worship was banned. Although paganism continued on the fringes of the Empire for some centuries, the ban on pagan worship meant that every person was officially required to be a Christian.

It spread word of mouth and not as openly proclaimed in places due to persectuions, but yet is spread like fire. This is the result of the Holy Spirit of God having a very strong influence in the lives of early believers. The believers lives were in stark contrast to the quality of lives lead by the pagans that made up Rome, and quickly won over people that found their commitment and their personal practice of personal holiness, admireable in such a decadent society. A big physical reason for it spreading so quickly through out the various regions of the Roman Empire was the vast Roman network of roads than ran through out the whole empire, making travel pretty easy, compared to any other period of history before.

Christianity has remained stable in absolute numbers for around a hundred years, but given the growth of human population in that time, its relative share of humanity has decreased somewhat. In other words, it isn;t spreading at all, just staying where it is.

It was adapted by Rome, and thus an official religion to many people. There were aggressive conversion attempts, and many were violent and forceful. Christianity is a universalizing religion, offering acceptance and pennance to those not born into it, ergo, it attracts many converts seeking eternal life.

Christianity spread as more people heard the preached word. Citizens found hope in the gospel. The Bible was not yet produced but the disciples preached in surrounding areas.
