The heart has two sides which are independent of each other. When it pumps, it pumps both on the left and right sides. The left carries blood throughout all the body tissues, and the right side pushes blood into the lungs for oxygenation.

A double pump makes sense in that there is a considerable amount of work in pumping blood from the heart through the body so that it would be a waste of energy to pump deoxygenated blood. All the blood coming back from the lungs and send to the vital organs is oxygenated this way.

The heart is made of 4 chambers.

a) Right auricle/atrium

b) Left auricle/atrium

c) Right ventricle

d) Left Ventricle

Blood enters the right atrium via the Venacavae (2 veins), is squeezed to the right atrium, enters the pulmonary arteries and goes to the lungs for purification.

After purification the lungs send the oxygenated blood back to the heart through the pulmonary veins and enters the left atrium from where it is sent to the aorta and then to all parts of the body through the left ventricle.

So it acts as a double pump as it pumps blood twice through a single cycle through the body.

Because the heart pumps blood twice. The first time it pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs so it can collect oxygen, and the second time it pumps the oxygenated blood to the rest of the body to supply it with oxygen.

the heart functions as a double pump because the heart pumps blood twice in the circulatory system. It pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs to be oxygenated and pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body and back

Is the heart a double pump?

The heart is a double pump, while the right side handles the oxygen-poor blood, the left side handles the oxygen-rich blood. The "lub-dub" is the heart pumping blood. The "lub" is the atriums contracting, and the "dub" is the ventricles contracting.
