If you aim a radio signal to a point just above the horizon (and above that) the signal hits the ionosphere waaaaay out there at a point faaaaar above the Earth. The result is that the ionosphere bends or "refracts" the radio waves, some of which shoot off into space, but the majority of which are bent back down to Earth. (A small bit of the signal is also "reflected" back to Earth)
This is called a "Skip", and you can reach out from hundreds of miles to thousands of miles farther than if there was no ionosphere. The Earth can actually reflect the (now weaker) signal back up where it is again refracted back down to Earth, but at a point that is hundreds or thousands of miles farther, yet.
If the ionosphere is really charged up by energy from Sunspots, then the radio signal can be 'bounced' to the far side of the Earth! When this happens, Hams like to say that, "The skip is in."
If the radio signal is aimed over the polar regions, then the ionosphere is often charged up by the same energy that causes the northern (or southern) lights.
From northern Idaho I have had some loud and clear conversations with people in Finland and other northerly countries by simply beaming my radio signal toward the north pole, and my antennas are mostly homemade and fairly simple!
