It is the thickness of 22 gauges.. or 64 one hundredths of a millimeter or twenty-five one thousandths of an inch. Check out a very conversionary unit conversion site here for silver informatics (http://www.silverenchantments.com/conversion-charts.html) You should know that actual thickness values depend on the material. Gauging, if I may, allows for a standardized approach to manufacture, inventory, etc. etc.

Many sheets, metal, plastic, fiber and vinyl use Stubbs' steel wire gauge measurements. Copper wire has different measurements.

22 ga. vinyl would be 0.028" inch or 28 mils in thickness.

A second means of determining thin plastic film thicknesses is that 1 gauge is equal to 1/100 mil or 0.00001 inches. or 0.254 microns. thus 22 gauge would be 0.22 mils or 5.6 microns (very thin indeed) a 0.9 mil trash bag (not a heavy duty bag) then by this definition would be a 90 gauge thickness. These are film thicknesses, not sheet thicknesses.
