How to Replace thermostat on 98 Oldsmobile silhouette?
I had to replace my thermostat. I moved the throttle head out of the way. I removed the air cleaner assy. I then removed the two bolts from the housing area and pulled out the thermostat. The tools I used were the 10mm/ 13mm/ flathead screw driver to remove air cleaner, and I also loosened four bolts on the aluminum covering below the throttle head. It took some time ( 2 hours) and patience. It helps if the vehicle is on ramps lifting up the front end of the vehicle. Thats how I did it.

Typically the handle does not need to be replaced. If the handle is there but does nothing more than flop back and forth then a part, usually plastic, has broken inside the door. This part usually fits into one part and snaps onto another part. This combination pulls a rod attached to the door relea…sing mechanism. Oldsmobile dealers and some auto part stores will have a pictorial view of these internal door parts. Very labor intensive to replace. (MORE)

How do you replace the overhead console lamp and the steering wheel lamps on an Oldsmobile Silhouette?
replacing lamps for switches . \nI had taken my 2000 Silhouette in for other problems and since I had it in the shop, I asked about the lamps on the overhead console and on the steering wheel remotes for the radio. They told me that the lamps are not replaceable, but the whole switch has to bed …replaced. I thought that this was quite a bummer. (MORE)
Answer . No special tools, just a matter of squeezing nylon clips to release filter. One bolt holds the assembly in place. Just snap filter back onto fuel lines making sure the clip locks into the filter (should hear a click). Install bolt to secure filter back in place.
Answer . \nToward the rear of the engine is a schrader valve ( looks like a tire valve with a cap) when you depress the valve there should be a fair amount of fuel pressure but when there is very little it most likely is the pump; GM vehicles have their share of fuel pump problems.Good luck.
Answer . This is difficult to do. it is located on the top of the engine on the right side. If you remove the air breather box first it will give you some room to work but the back bolt on the thermostat is really difficult to get out due to lack of room to move the wrench. it takes several h…ours lots a patience. you have to pop the hood and look at the mounting brackets there is i believe 2 or 3 wing nuts on the top along the hood latch mount. take them off so your whole headlight casing comes out but make sure you do this slowly and pay attention because there are little holes that are guides for putting t…he mount back in. once you have done that then all you do is twist the black knob and the light pops out. all done. after that it is pretty easy. same system for the signal markers. Should be located at the engine end of the upper radiator hose Drain about 1 gallon of coolant from the radiator Remove housing at end of upper radiator hose Observe how thermostat is installed Clean both surfaces Install new thermostat and gasket Re-fill cooling system slowly to prevent an "airlock…" Start vehicle and watch for leaks Run vehicle to normal operating temperature with heater on Re-check coolant level -the above is extremely simplified... it is actually a HUGE job, and one I am undertaking at this time. (same applies for Chevy Venture, Pontiac Montana and Transport, and Oldsmobile Silhouette for all years 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001... six cylinder 3400 engine). Thermostat is under the throttle body which is on top of the engine on the left/driver side of the engine compartment, but it is ALSO behind the exhaust manifold! You MUST rotate the engine forward, then remove the ignition coil and ECG module, and other stuff too. Then you can get to the bolts for the manifold heat shield, and then you can remove the manifold. Best to get a repair manual, as all steps have many, many other steps to prepare for the next step. Wish this were easier... shame on you, manufacturers of these models. What is a 1/2 hour job on most vehicles, becomes at least 6 or more hours on these! I am not happy right now (my thermostat stuck closed, which overheats the engine in about 3-4 miles. You can let it cool for 10 minutes, and drive another 3-4 miles, if you don't have towing on your insurance. At least I HOPE it is the thermostat, and not a clogged radiator, which is what I will replace next .... or maybe the water pump... the belt tension is OK for the pump.) Answer . First raise the hood. You will see two separate plastic light housings, one containing the headlamp, and the other the parking light and turn signal bulb. There is a plastic thumb screw on the turn signal housing that you must totally unscrew. Remove it and put is someplace safe while yo…u continue. Gently pull the turn signaly assembly straight out towards the front. You may have to tug on it a bit, but remember these things are plastic and expensive, so be careful. There are two plastic tongues on the assembly you are trying to remove that fit into a couple of slots back behind, and if you're lucky they will slide out. If they don't slide out like they are supposed to then put it back together and take it to the dealer. If the assembly does pop out correctly, just twist the bulb socket out, turn the bulb and insert the new replacement. (MORE)
Answer . \nfollow the top radiator hose to the intake manifold... there will be an elbow its connected to. take off the elbow and under it will be your thermostat.

Why could my 1997 Oldsmobile silhouette run hot after replacing water pump and thermostat on vehicle?
If it wasn't running hot before the changes you may have an airlock in the water system. If it was running hot before it might still be an airlock or it could be the head gasket leaking. Whichever it is it needs sorting quickly. The best placed to cure this problem are your local garage or dealershi…p. But you could try this first: With the engine cold and all the heater controls set to hot, remove the top from the expansion bottle. Make sure there's the required level of fluid in it then squeeze the thick radiator hoses to try and move the air out of the system. Run the engine and check for more air. Replace the expansion botle cap. Note: Sludge in the water, continuous air bubbles, antifreeze colour change or oil in the water all indicate headgasket leaks (MORE)

I just replaced mine in a 2003 model and it was pretty simple. I ordered a replacement online for around $45. There are only 3 bolts holding it on - access by popping off the inside door panel - only one screw here under the arm rest and the rest were little pop-in fasteners. The old mirror just …unplugged and the new one plugged right in with no problem. Re-tighten the 3 bolts, snap the door panel back on and tighten the one screw and it was ready to go again. (MORE)

Remove serpentine belt . Remove any components obstructing any bolts on water pump . Ensure coolant cach container is in position because your engine coolant will come out . Remove any hoses from pump (if they are stuck on you can stick something under where hose attaches to pump and this will he…lp fee up the seal). You may also have to remove pulley (easier to loosen bolts while serpentine belt is on). . Make sure bolts are re-installed in same position (you can put them in bolt holes of new pump then swap them to old pump before installing new part). . After removing pump (you may need to pry old pump off) clean all old gasket material off engine mating surface (scraper, flat screwdriver, die grinder are all tools that can be used). . Use brake cleaner on both engine and new pump mating surfaces to ensure they are clean, then use black silicone (or equal sealant) on both the engine and new pump (both sides of gasket). . After applying silicone install new pump on engine and place bolts in to hold it in position . Install bolts hand tight . USE PROPER TORQUE SEQUENCE AND SPEC TO TIGHTEN BOLTS- DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN BOLTS BECAUSE IT CAN DAMAGE GASKET. . Re-install all other parts and properly fill cooling system. (MORE)
It's at the front of the engine, under the housing that holds the large upper radiator hose. Two bolts [1/2" socket size] and the smaller bypass hose must be unfastened. This is a good time to replace that short bit of bypass hose with new. Don't break the thermostat housing bolts off - if it requir…es too much torque, get help from an experienced mechanic. Sometimes, working back and forth with spray lube will remove stubborn fasteners. Once the fasteners and bypass hose are free, tap the housing loose, and it should come right off, spilling a bit of coolant... unless you cleverly drained some out first at say the radiator drain cock. Right there in the intake should be your thermostat, easy to pry out. Scrape away the old gasket remnants and put in the new 'stat, sensor end down in the engine of course. Form-a-gasket #2 [NOT SILICONE] makes a great sealer for the gasket AND THE BOLTS, which do pass thru into the coolant. If you must replace the bolts, use the EXACT SAME LENGTH and/or stainless, so that they won't get rust buildup on the inside, which can prevent successful removal in the future. (MORE)
The thermostat is located where the hose leaves the engine to go to the top of the radiator. You unscrew the bolts holding the hose mounting to the engine. There you find the thermostat.
