There's a little blue pocket-sized book, "Colts Date of Manufacture: 1837-1978" by R.L. Wilson that has serial numbers listed by model and date. Very handy. The information in the book shows up on the Web now and then, just Google "colt serial numbers," and see what you find.

You can find a list of Colt M1911 and M1911A1 production serial numbers at http://www.coolgunsite.com/pistols/colt%20production.htm. Going by the numbers in your question (7071), it looks like you have a M1911 that was made for the Navy in 1912, the first year of production.

Depends. Who made your 1911? For a fee, Colt will research dates and original purchaser. But not all 1911s were made by Colt. PS- 1911 or 1911A1? Also you can check at proofhouse.com for list of dates by serial numbers.

You must all Colt. The serial number you list is not in the proper range.
http://proofhouse.com/colt shows 1930 for the serial number but without the "S" My production date list shows 1930: 383001-400000 and 1978 starting S01001,so it would be 1978 or after.
If the serial numbers starts with a "G", you have a Colt Peacemaker Buntline. The serial number you list has to two more numbers than it should have. If the sn is G62260 - it was made in 1973 If the sn is G26028 - it was made in 1971 A New Frontier Buntline would have NF in the serial number.
Find the serial number and look up the date on a list of Olds serial numbers.
You will have to call Colt with the serial number since you did not list it in your question.
