turn the gas dial (knob) to off. remove the access cover off the water heater on the bottom of the water heater. if the water heater is more than a few years old it will have to be lit with a match or equalivant. wait 5 minutes before lighting after the gas is shut off. turn the gas control knob to the pilot position and push the knob down. and hold it in that position. This will feed gas to the pilot burner. Inside you will see a short (1"-1-1/2") long x 1/8" silver colored shaft, just above this is usually that is where the gas comes out and where you should place the burning match immediately upon pushing the pilot knob down. This should light the water heater pilot flame. Continue holding the pilot knob down for approx. 1 minute after it is lit. That will heat up the thermocouple which will allow the gas to contnue to be supplied to the pilot burner. After approx. 1 minute you should be able to let off the control knob and the pilot flame should stay lit. If it does, replace the access cover and turn the control knob to "on". If it will not stay lite after burning for approx. 1 minute then the thermocouple may be bad and need to be replaced.

If you have a newer version it will have a pizo ignition (much like a gas bar-b-que grille) follow the above instructions but rather than inserting a match or similar device to light the pilot lite there is a little push button that you would push in the area of the "on" control knob, push and hold the pilot knob down and repeatly push the igniation button until lit. Do not hold the pilot gas valve in the open position without repeatedly striking the ignighter until the flame lights, otherwise there may be a flashback in the burner.

The detailed directions are printed on front of EVERY gas regulator. - However, in general, turn regulator switch to OFF for 2 minutes, then to PILOT and depress for one minute, then light pilot or press clicker till it lights. Keep PILOT pressed for 2 more minutes then slowly release it. If it stays on then turn main switch to RUN or ON.

By reading the directions provided with the heater

The older types of water heaters have a gas controller that has on top there is a button called pilot and you must turn the adjusting knob to pilot then hold the button down , light the pilot tube located just below the thermo couple HOLD it down for TWO minutes (enough time to heat the thermo couple) then release and make sure the pilot stays lit.. Then turn the dial to ON and adjust the temperature

On the newer models there is an sparker and you should read the directions supplied with each type of heater .

You should also find out why the pilot light went out as down drafts can be quite dangerous.

If you are having trouble with getting your home’s water to become hot, there is a chance that your water heater’s pilot light has blown out. High winds, irregular usage, and other factors can cause the pilot light to go out periodically.

Check to See if the Light is Out

If you suspect that the pilot light has blown out, check the water heater unit to be sure. You will probably need a flashlight so that you can see underneath the hot water heater to check the pilot light. Some water heaters have covers that need to be removed before you can see the pilot light. Look for a long pipe that has a small hole in the center. If you do not see a flame burning, you will need to light the pilot so that it can warm the water in the hot water heater.

Turn the Unit Off

Before you begin the lighting process, turn off the unit for about five minutes. This allows any natural gas that may have been lingering in the pipe or around the exterior of the pipe to dissipate completely. After a few minutes have lapsed, use your flashlight to locate the pilot hole again. Light a long stick or a fireplace match that will comfortably reach underneath the unit and set fire to the gas that shoots out of the hole in the pipe. Do not try to light the pilot with a regular match or a cigarette lighter because you will not be able to reach the pilot comfortably.

Hold Down the Switch and Light the Pilot

Turn the gas switch to the on position and push it down. While you hold the switch down with one hand, light the pilot with the other. As soon as the pilot catches, you can blow out the match that you used to light it. Continue to hold down the on switch for approximately 30 seconds so that the pilot will heat up the temperature regulator properly. Once the temperature regulator has been heated to the appropriate temperature, the pilot light should remain burning once you release the on switch. If the light goes out, repeat the lighting process again.

Why isn't the gas hot water pilot not lighting?

Gas not turned on to water heater. Gas valve on water heater not set to pilot setting. Faulty gas valve. Igniter for lighting pilot not working.

No.

What is a orifice on water heater?

Gas water heater has an orifice for main burner and for pilot light, if not electronic ignition.

If a pilot light goes out in a gas water heater does the gas keep running?

No because water heaters have a safety valves and when the pilot light goes out the safety valve shuts off the gas

Where is the pilot located on the gas water heater?

Right below the thermocouple if applicable

THERMOCOUPLE or defective gas valve

small amount

Same as any hot water heater. Turn the gas valve to off.

Why does gas water heater cost more than electric?

gas valve and pilot assebley cost more

Why doesn't my hot water heater light everytime?

If it is gas operated, the hot water heater may not light because it may have a defective millivolt sensor. The millivolt sensor is heated up by the pilot and generates a fractional amount of voltage telling the gas valve that the pilot is lit and the gas valve can now be safely opened to heat the water heater.

If the pilot light goes out on your hot water heater is it dangerous or harmful?

No, it is not dangerous. (Unless you are working with a water heater that is 20+ years old.) In any modern hot water heater, if the pilot light goes out a fail-safe will go off - preventing gas from leaking out. Also, there is a sensor so if there is not enough air-flow or oxygen with the water heater, it will shut off the gas.

Will a water heater consume gas while is not running?

A small amount to keep the pilot light going.
