How do you fix a second floor bathroom leak coming from the bathtub water valve when turned on when water is dripping through the fan vent to the bathroom below creating a wet spot on the floor?

Fixing a leak You should first check fan vent outlet on roof - should have a flapper of some kind that may be stuck open or have a hole in it. If it only leaks when it is raining that is first clue. One other possibility is the vent pipe is running through cold attic causing condensation - you can wrap vent pipe with insulation to solve that one . Shorten distance of fan vent, too much condensation to evaporate before running back to fan.More input from FAQ Farmers:It isn't possible to fix a leak unless you know where the leak is coming from. It could be from the bath, basin, radiator, toilet. We need more information.Fix the bathtub water valve first, since you know it is broken. If you have a plumber do this, he may be able to diagnose what is happening with the fan. Recently, we found that the condensation pipe was plugged, and we got a leak--the water always finds a path.

What are ferrules used for in plumbing?

A ferrule is used on a compression type joint. Care should be taken to properly tighten the nut, but typically it goes between the nut and a fitting. You should use plastic ferrules on plastic pipe but also be sure to use a brass or stainless sleeve inside the open end of the pipe so you don't crush it and it maintains therigidity of the pipe. You should use a brass ferrule on copper pipe which are stronger and give a better squeeze on the pipe sealing the joint. Usually hand tight plus a 1/2 turn is good to start with. water test the fitting and if it leaks you can always shut it back off and tighten more. One rule of plumbing is tight is tight, too tight is broke! There is no need to apply pipe sealant, pipe dope, or Teflon tape to the threads of the compression nut. None of these things will hurt, but they won't help either, since the seal depends ONLY on how well the ferrule is compressed against the pipe and the taper of the fitting. If the fitting leaks, it is because something is wrong. You could have over- or under-tightened the nut, the ferrule might have been damaged, the taper might have a nick in it, etc.

How much money does a pipe fitter make in a year?

Depends what pipe fitter. Also depends how busy he/she is how many people he/she has working working for them. and what type of pipes they fit too.

In an older house if you have the metal pipe for the toilet without a flange in the basement can you split the pipe and add the flange to use it for a sink drain too?

Install a ty fitting on the stack in the basement then run it to the sink. Put it low enough to account for a fall in the pipe, to allow proper drainage. Be sure to install a waste and vent pipe to code for both fixtures.

Can you make a working smoking pipe from balsa wood?

I would think not. It's too light-weight and seems extremely flammable.

My sink is leaking and I want to fix it but I am not sure what plumbing parts to get - Can anyone help?

There typically isn't too much to the pipes under a sink. There is the down pipe from the sink drain, the trap, and the exit pipe out of the trap. You can typically get all the replacement parts in PVC form quite cheap, and they are usually standard fitting components. You may want to take off what you have and bring it with you when you buy new parts, just to match up the sizing.

Fix it Yourself or Hire a Plumber to Tackle Your Plumbing Repair?

With homeownership comes responsibility. Items need maintaining and repairing. If you have a leaky pipe or clogged toilet, you will need to get it repaired. You will need to decide whether to fix it yourself, or hire a plumber to do it for you. There are many plumbing repair problems that you may come across while owning your home. Most are from pipes within the walls, some are from appliances such as washers. Often, you will not know about a pipe leak until it becomes a major issue. A small leak can go un-detected within a wall for quite some time. Unfortunately, left untreated, it will continue to grow. Leaking wall pipes may be best repaired by a plumber. After pinpointing a plumbing problem, you’ll have a major decision to make. Do you want to take care of your plumbing repair yourself, or hire a plumber to do it for you? One deciding factor will be price. Obviously, a professional plumber will cost you more. But, if you have a plumbing repair that will require tools you don’t have, or is too large of a project for you to tackle, hiring a plumber is what may be best. If you choose to repair a plumbing problem yourself, you will need to have the right tools for the job as well as an idea of how to fix it. Some repair projects are minor. If your toilet is running, it could just need a few inexpensive parts that are easy to install. You will then have the satisfaction of doing the job yourself while saving some money. Kitchen and bathroom sinks that become clogged may need nothing more than cleaning the pipe of debris. This can be accomplished with a tool called a snake. Since drains can become blocked easily, it would be a good idea to have this tool as part of your home toolkit. If your plumbing problem is not a major priority and you would like to do it yourself but don’t have the time, you could consider attending a do-it-yourself class. These are offered free of charge at some major home warehouse stores. A plumbing repair can be small or large. But either way it will need to be taken care of. Decide if you can handle the job, or call a plumber.
