In ancient times, the remarkable conquests of Alexander the Great (356-323 BCE or BC) were made possible for several reasons. The dominance of Macedonian and Greek military tactics was one of the reasons, along with the general superiority of 'western' soldiers relative to their 'eastern' (Persian and other) opponents. At the same time, it should not be overlooked that Alexander's own tactical genius and strategic acumen, even his distinctively forceful will and energy, were also important factors.

With intelligence and smart military tactics. His army was routinely outnumbered. He used his men better than the other army. Also he inherited Macedonia from his father who was assassinated. He took over and tried to find the one who sent the assassin (Dorias i think). While trying to find this guy, he heard that there were riches to the east. He traveled and conquered many lands until he came to a battle with this king. the king fled the battle, Alexander defeated that guy's army. Alexander came upon Babylon i think and loved it so much that he decided to stay. He loved the culture, the people and felt that he could breed a superior race of Macedonian and Babylonian. He then proceeded to catch the king who he had found dead (the guy was betrayed by his own because he failed them). After that he suddenly died, nobody is sure why. Some say it is because of disease, some say battle, some say assassination. He and Ghengis Khan are the only people to conquer the Persians (now Iran) in all of history.

Alexander's empire so different from the rest of the Greek city-states because it wasn't even a city-state. Macedon itself wasn't even a city-state, but more of a country.
