∙ 11y agoCalifornia was first settled by the Spanish and was included in its colony of Nueva España. Upon this colony's independence in 1821, it formed into Mexico. So at this time, Mexico included California. However, Mexico's neighbor, the USA was going through some high levels of nationalism at this time and was looking to expand from sea to sea. The US went to war with Mexico in 1848 (the Mexican-American War) for land, ended up winning, and acquired 1/3 of Mexico's land (what is now the Western US). So technically, California was acquired from the Mexicans.
