Cyprus was never "discovered" by westerners because it was positioned right in the middle of the Old World and therefore there was never a time when "westerners" were not aware of its existance. In fact, because of its convenient location, in the ancient times Cyprus used to be an important trading post for the whole Mediterranean region. Cyprus was first settled by humans in the Paleolithic period (known as the stone age) and coexisted with various dwarf animal species, such as dwarf elephants(Elephas cypriotes) and pygmy hippos (Hippopotamus minor) well into the Holocene. These settlers were agriculturalists from the Levant who reached the island by sea.
