The Moral and Political argument was that expansion was rejection of the nation's founding principle of "Liberty for all." Some thought Imperialism was another type of racism. Also there was to many costs for the military, which caused more taxes on the United States. Plus Americans would have to compete for the jobs because people that were annexed to the U.S. would come and look for jobs.

Imperialism was the goal of creating an Empire out of weaker nations. Basic American principles are that each person should have basic freedoms and rights. An empire goes completely against individual rights and freedoms. In an empire there is a soul leader and in having a soul leader there is one person controlling the empire. Which could be considered a dictator, in a Dictatorship freedoms and rights are compromised.
