It is uncertain how the Mayan civilization decayed. Theories suggest that the Mayans collapsed due to overpopulation, peasant revolt, climate change, collapse of key trade routes, epidemic disease and environmental disasters. By the time the Spaniards came to their land, No Mayans were found. (Aztecs on the other hand, were conquered by the Spaniards)

The Mayan Priests were in charge of the rest. They performed ceremonies, ruled the cities, and ran governments among them. One of the famous Mayan rulers was called Lord Pacal. Pacal became king at the age of 6. He was a King/Ruler/Priest for about 50 years. His tomb was found and when discovered, he was wearing a jade mask (death mask)

Each major Maya city had its own ruler. Maya rulers used their power and wealth to help out nobles who served the priests and officials. Rulers would keep their nobles close by for guidance. Noble families usually lived around the king's palaces. Maya kings increased power and prestige through warfare.
