∙ 12y agoBy shooting looking up at a glass bottom into which ink is injected to form the letters is the way in which the wicked witch's skywriting was created in "The Wizard of Oz."
Specifically, water mixed with white calla oil was poured to the depth of 1-1/2 inches in a 6 foot square tank whose walls were wood and whose bottom was glass. A 3/8 of an inch tall miniature witch was placed on a hypodermic needle to simulate the Wicked Witch of the West on her broom. The words were written with the mild and nigrosine dye that filled the needle.

∙ 12y agoActually a Cyclone, and it propels the lead character , Dorothy, to Oz. It is interesting but owing to its extreme stormy violence ( Literally ripping clouds) a real-life cyclone would Not produce a rainbow which is dependent on more placid air-fronts. Some of the production types almost excised the virtual theme-song Over the Rainbow- on the grounds, well a Cyclone would be too violent to produce one, say, on meteorological grounds. Song-lovers weathered the storm, and the song stayed in. It was not an original design-concept, by the way.
