They were shot in the basement of the Ipatiev house in Ekaterinburg, Siberia with rifle and automatic weapons (a few M-1911 Colts made in the USA) by Cheka officers, Red Guard soldiers and some local men recruited to guard the Romanovs. A Lieutenant Jacob Yurofsky was in charge (he fired the first round).

seadove: The rise of the Bolsheviks led to the house imprisonment of the Romanovs at first at the Tsarskoe Selo and later at Ekaterinburg, were they stayed at the Ipatiev House. It was here that the Romanovs no longer had privacy and had to deal with the callousness of their jailers. It was the night of when they were told to get dressed, the jailers telling them that anti-Bolshevik forces were on their way to rescue them. They were led to the basement, given only a chair to sit down. Thus it was only Alexandra-- with the Tsarevich Alexis on her lap, sitting while the rest of the family was huddled behind her. They waited until the Bolsheviks came, first firing a shot to the head on Nicholas who instantly died and then a volley of shots for the rest of the family.

The bodies were brought outside in a dug pit, chopped to pieces and later burned. They then covered the bones and ashes with soil as if nothing happened. The whole of Russia didn't know what happened to the Romanovs until very late, when the girls' tutor Pierre Gillard searched around the site and found the corpse of the girls' pet dog. The search parties dug around and found a finger whose nail polish was like the one Alexandra used to wear, and another a shoe buckel which the tutor identified as being like the one in the shoes the girls' used to wear. They also found a ring very similar to the one on Nicholas' finger, the one that he couldn't take off.

Anastasia died with her family. Although many people believe she didn't die with her family, she actually did. Since 1918, many people have claimed to be the Grand Duchess.

In the early hours of July 17th 1918 Tsar Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra, his four daughters Olga, Tatiana, Marie and Anastasia, their younger brother Alexei and a few family servants were escorted down to the basement of the house - for 'protection' from the Pro-Tsar White Armies closing in on the village - where they were being held and promptly told that they were to be executed. Before anyone could react they were murdered in cold blood and their bodies were later thrown down an abandoned mine a short distance from the village in the middle of a forest.

Sulphuric Acid was thrown on the bodies so that if anyone uncovered the remains they wouldn't realize it was the imperial family.

The bodies remained undiscovered until the early 1980s and it wasn't until June 1991, after communism fell, that they were properly identified as the Tsar, his wife, the servants and three of the duchesses.

It wasn't until late August of 2007 that two partially burned skeletons were found at a bonfire site near the abandoned mine. These were identified as the last missing duchess and a young male, presumed almost undoubtedly to be Alexei since the male body was found near charred strips of striped blue and white material, a common favourite shirt of the prince.

DNA testing in 2008 confirmed this.
