Conditions at a death camp were as it sounds in the title "death camp". There was mass starvation and gas chambers were killing thousands every week. And disease such as typhoid fever, malaria, and other infections were standard for most people. inside barracks where hundreds of people slept, there was long rows of bunk beds with no mattress but sometimes hay, and two or more people shared one bunk with one blanket per person. guards did not need reason or permission to kill Jews. Escape attempts were punished by death from either torture or the gas chamber.

After Adolf Hitler ascended as the Chancellor of Germany in 1933, 'Nazi' remained the only political party in the Germany. The event of 'Reichstag Fire' created a critical situation in Germany which forced the parliament to grant 'dictator powers' to Hitler. Hitler, then made sure that all the other political parties were suppressed. Nazi then emerged as the sole ruling party and started inflicting draconian laws in Germany. The Nazi philosophy believed, that only humans of Nordic descent had a right to live in Germany. Thus began the attempts to eradicate the Jewish population (about 566,000) from Germany. Concentration camps or the Konzentrationslager, were the ultimate outcome of Nazi policy of eradicating anyone 'undesirable'. The concept of concentration camp, finds its origin long before the World War II, but their notoriety only increased when they were used as an aid for Holocaust. Although, 90% of the concentration camps were populated by Jews, the remaining 10% comprised of members of other political parties, journalists, prisoners of wars, clergy or anyone who attempted to contradict the Nazism. Other group of victims that endured the wrath of Nazis included homosexuals, disabled, Russians and people of Slav origin.

Living conditions

Living conditions varied from what Concentration Camps people are in. In the bigger camps, conditions were oftenly harder - there was an lack of space, the food were worser and their was harsher disaplines. Conditions were never good anywhere but there was camps where the contions which were bearable. This can be shown from n quotation by Ana Novac, A prisoner at Auschwitz-Birkenau. she shared an Sleeping space with 4 other woman but soon she was tranfered to an smaller camp and Wieseau, where conditions were better. "We are told we will wash daily, that their will be hot water to wash in. Their ware 4-5 Rooms in each barrack, 20 bunkers to a room and One person per Bunk with an Blanket and A Pillow. An spoon on an real Plate. The soup is real, proper soup too and the bread was fresh. These conditions were unusually good".

Housing

In most camps the prisoners lived in Barracks. Where there was overcrowding or where the prisoners were building a new camp, they lived in Tents. Whereever they were, the prisoners were crowded together. They either slept on the floor, if they were lucky enough they would slept on Straw matresses to sleep on, or in bunks. If they slept in Bunks, it was usually several prisoners on 1 bunk. In these conditions diseases, lice and fleas spreaded rapidlt. Another qutoe from Ana Novac when remembering conditions in Auschwitz-Birkenau. "They say a transport of Italian woman are to be moved itno our barrack. They turned out to be Greeks, from Rhodes. What difference does it make anyway? It's 300 more to argue over blankets and space. Now you only can turn all together. It's impossible to sleep on your back, even raising my knees were causing little grumbling from all sides."

Sanitation

Camp barracks, toilets and washrooms were painted with saying like: "Cleanliness is your duty". Despite this saying, Camp sanitation was so bad that it was impossible for prisoners to keep clean. Prisoners often have to cope with using wells or a top outside for washing. Also their was an massive toilet pit. Even with toilets and washrooms, prisoners were not aloud to use them sensibly. They had an minute or two to Wash in the morning and simular to when using the toiler. Prisoners were also not aloud to leave the barracks at night so sometimes they were provided toilet buckets and sometimes not.

Disinfection

The SS regurally disinfected prisonerS. They made thiss unpleasent as they possibly can for the prisoners. they had to wait while but naked. Sometimes they had to usually run around the nearest square or do exercises. Some prisoners died whiles taking the disinfections. An prisoner named Tadeusz Soboewicz remembers this. " It took 3 hours for us to get to the vat. We had been naked all of the time. When we got there they dragged an body out of the tub. Their was already 4 corpses stacked against the wall. I quickly climbed into the tub. The water was freezing but it also burned me. There was too much chlorine in the tub but iI went under quickly before the SS pushed me and hold me under the water".

What was the purpose of a death camp?

The purpose of a death camp was when Jews were sent for mass murdering, (genocide). This is not the same as a concentration camp, only because it was where political prisoners were confined, usually under harsh conditions and the camps functioned as prisons and centers of forced labor.

How did they treat the prisioners in dachau?

Dachau was an ordinary concentration camp, not an extermination camp. Its main purpose was a punishment and labour camp for political prisoners. Obviously, conditions there were bad, but it was not comparable to extermination camps like Treblinka. Most of the Jews at Dachau were there because of their politics. Wikipedia gives the death toll at Dachau and its sub-camps as about 35,000.
