In southeast Asia, the imperialists applied to principal of maximum extraction of Natural Resources, then focusing on improving the infrastructure of the occupied countries. Industries such as mining, agricultural and exports grew. However, the slow moving wheels of bureaucracy caused resentment and led to demands for self determination from nationalistic groups.
It certainly brought SEA to the world's attention for one. It created a second language (French) and a new religion or two (Catholic), caused a few evolutions in dress, road construction, and architecture. And last, but not least, led to the French and American Wars.

2. Second language

The Occidental (Westerner) and the Oriental (Easterner) have taken turns colonizing each other. They are competitors. In 400 BC Attila conquered much of eastern Europe; in 1200 AD Ghengis Khan conquered all the way into Russia and Hungary.
In the 1800s and 1900s colonized SEA areas by Occidentals (Westerners)(Southeast Asia) were re-taken by Easterners (Orientals) in WWII.
Two different cultures, always competitive with each other. They each have:
1. Different styles of writing.
2. Different styles of religion.
3. Different philosophies.
4. Different methods of warfare.
5. Different methods of family.
6. Different civilizations.
7. Different sciences.
