I have always worked on the presumption that this produced a stapled document that was easier to pull apart than a regular inwardly-crossed staple. According to this Wikipedia article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stapler#Pinning, this appears to be the case, but I never realised that it was supposed to be a tear-free form of stapling. I must admit, I am a bit dubious as to whether it is really that easy to separate sheets stapled thusly!
