I have an Acer Aspire 5534 that shows a blank screen the fan runs for about a second then stops all I see is the blue power light and I can hear the HDD Is it worth fixing?

Hello!

I'm never one for pitching a laptop until all reasonable efforts are made to locate the issue.

So, I researched your issue and it seems that you may need an update to the BIOS ("basic input/output system" which is the hardware and internal software that is responsible for booting the system). OR you may have a bad 'stick' of RAM.

First try this:

When the computer is totally off, press the power switch and hold it down for 4 seconds and then let go.

If the laptop powers up and windows starts to load normally you may need an update to your bios/firmware.

If your computer does start normally, you can check the version of your BIOS by using the following steps:

To find your current BIOS version in Windows, please follow the steps below:

1. If you are running Windows 7 or Windows Vista:
   • From the Start menu, type msinfo32 in the search bar and hit the Enter key.
   If you are running Windows XP:
   • From the Start menu, click Run and type msinfo32 in the Run box and hit the Enterkey.
2. In the System Information window, click System Summary and locate your current BIOS Version/Date to the right.

At the time of this article, the current BIOS version for your computer is 1.6. You can find the updated BIOS 'software' on the Acer Support Site -Downloads & Support Documents - Aspire / Aspire 5534

The cause of your problem may also be that the BIOS battery needs replacing. It's sorta like a battery that goes into a watch or remote key fob for your car. Now, if the computer still doesn't come on after the 4 power button test, you might have an issue with the memory which is installed on the machine. Acer does not support users replacing memory, their website says to contact them directly if you suspect a memory issue.
