it doesn't make any sense, does it?? It is just because there happen to be a lot of smileys and can't some of them just be sad??
The original figure was the Smiley, the yellow circle with the smiling face. People started to adapt it and show different feelings on the Smiley, but continued to call it a Smiley. So we have a Sad Smiley, and a winking Smiley, and....well you get the idea.
