No, the insurance carrier would not be "required" to pay for a rental until you finished the settlement. There are several reasons behind this, the biggest being that every person involved in an accident -- regardless of fault -- has a duty to mitigate (or lessen) the damages. If the insurance carrier has made a relatively fair offer to you, they will normally extend the rental a few days so you can get into another vehicle, but even if you don't get a new vehicle, they're under no obligation to continue your rental.
This serves the purpose of making the involved parties of an accident mitigate their damages. For instance, if you're told that your vehicle will probably be a total loss, but you don't plan on looking for a replacement vehicle until you actually have a check, you have only yourself to blame. Insurance companies are in business for the same reason as any other business: To make money. They will pay just what they legally owe and rarely go beyond that.
