If it takes 8 days for 7 men to dig a hole
Then that same hole can be dug in 1 day by 7 x 8 = 56 men
and in 1/2 day by 56 x 2 = 112 men.
ALTERNATIVE : This can be regarded as an inverse proportion problem, namely as one quantity ( the number of men) increases then the other quantity (time to dig the hole) decreases .
The number of man-days to dig the hole is 7 x 8 = 56 man days.
This means that whatever number of men are used or whatever time it takes to dig the hole then the product of these quantities remains constant.
If the hole is dug in 1/2 day then it will require 56 ÷ 1/2 = 56 x 2 = 112 men.
