Depending on the mission, shuttles carry a few days worth of consumables (food, water and extra oxygen). As long as power is not completely out, air can be also be kept breathable by removing carbon dioxide. Also, the shuttle needs power to keep the astronauts warm, and to operate the guidance and landing systems. A shuttle with little or no power would require rescue within about a day or two, so fixing any power outage would be critically important. The shuttles also need to be protected from impacts with meteoroids (or orbital "space junk"), which could cause damage and air or power loss.
Bummer

Usually, if a person was disabled, they wouldn't be kept as slaves, just left to die. If a slave became disabled during enslavement, they'd be put out in the streets. Sad, I know.
