It depends. Whiskey is a distilled liquor, water is usually added after the distillation and then the whiskey is aged in oak barrels to get a characteristic flavor. A whiskey's alcohol content is marked by a proofing label. This proof is an indication of the percentage of alcohol. 100 proof whiskey is 50% alcohol. some whiskeys are 40 proof, on the low end, and others are as high as 180 proof. Moonshine is not whiskey, it is not aged, that can range from 100 proof to 195 proof.

Whiskey has varying proof levels depending on the specific whiskey.

What I can tell you not knowing the specific whiskey, is that aged Irish whiskey (whisky that is barreled for aging) is at proofs varying from 124 to 150 proof. The whiskey will lose some alcoholic strength as they mature.

American whiskies are barreled at 105 to 110 prof which is between 53 and 55% alcohol. As these whiskies mature their alcoholic strength increases.

The reason Irish whiskey reduces is alcoholic levels is because the maturing barrels are stored under humid conditions while American whiskies alcoholic strength increases is because their maturing vessels are stored under warm, dry conditions.

Scottish Whisky is 40% proof.

Whiskey is usually 80 proof, which is to say that it is 40% alcohol. (U.S. standards, proof is twice the percentage).

Since 100 proof is 50 percent alcohol it seems logical that 120 proof it should contain 60 percent alcohol.
