The betta fish is making a bubble nest because he is happy it doesnt necessarily mean he wants to mate or have a friend. Do NOT mate him with a female if you are un-prepared to father the fry. The male will raise the fry to a point, but after that you're daddy.. You need to be fully prepared with proper food, water conditions, lighting, etc. It's a hard job.
He doesnt need another fish in the tank with him, but if you want other fish with him do some hard core research first. Bettas are pron to getting their fins damaged by other fish. == ==
