It only means he was a gentleman and he is honest to you. Put yourself in his situation. Life isn't all that hard ... if you wonder about his feelings for his ex simply ask him the question, "Do you have any indications of going back to your ex, because I'm not hanging around if you are." Hopefully (and it sounds like he is a good guy) he'll explain everything and I'm sure he would rather be with you than her.
