We are raised in a society that looks to media like television and magazines to guide our lifestyles and many young women put their lives at serious risk as they strive to look like these stick figures in magazines. Other cultures around the world and throughout time are much more receptive to all body types. Some even prefer a thicker woman. Magazines are not true representations of society by any means and people think they need all the sh** they're selling to fill their empty lives. And that's all I have on that. Of course the above is true, but it depends on what magazine you are reading. Readers Digest has been one of the highest rating and most helpful magazines going for years. Most magazines on fashion, make-up, models, etc., are all of the above the other poster mentioned and they can write dangerous articles. I write articles so one has to be very careful that they believe in the project they are doing and allowed to exhibit the truth in their article be it for the good or bad. I won't take on a project where I have to lie.

1. it inspires people to do different things.

there are all kinds of articles on things like music, books, beauty, culture.

to me reading these articles make me want to explore the world and take apart in these things that i wouldn't have know about before reading these magazines.

2. it allows people to appreciate these different things.

i know that nylon magazine has a culture issue that allows me to take a look at things going on in different parts of the world. not only is the culture section something you can learn to appreciate but all the other images and articles in these types of magazines. the way people do their hair and make up could be something you admire or the type of music that is talked about in a certain issue.

i don't belie fashion magazines are just limited to clothes and accessories. there are many topics covered and everyone can find something that is to be understood or appreciated.

The media has the ability to influence society by broadcasting what they believe you should see. They glorify some things and put down other things. Most people watch television to get there information. The media can put a "spin" on things which may not be intirely true. One example would be when war breaks out. The network covering that event will broadcast in behalf of there opinion, the reporters may show dead bodies and Horror instead of showing things such as the living and economic conditions of the people in that region. The war may be fought for freedom and prosperity but what the network is showing can lead there audience to be anti-war, which leads to protests and possibly the continued suffering of the people that are desperate for rights and a democratic society.
