He did not invent modems. Bell Labs had invented them long before that. The first modems were used on the SAGE air defense computer system starting in 1958 on dedicated leased lines. In the 1960s Bell Labs invented the dial up modem to allow access to the tymesharing mainframe computers, which were widely used before microcomputers became available.
