The story does not relate her family circumstances beyond having a sister who appears briefly at the start and end. Lewis Carroll was employed as a Professor of Mathematics under his real name (Charles Dodgson), so would have been reasonably well-paid. He would have moved in middle-class circles, probably not the glitterati of the time, especially when writing the stories. Most likely, he aimed the books at families of similar means as well as the wealthy.
