Eating Underworld food makes you stay there forever. So, she had to. Demeter was outraged, and fought with Hades, ruler of the Underworld. So, eventually, they made a deal. Persephone had to stay in the Underworld for 6 months every year, for the 6 seeds she ate. According to legend, it is her visits, not the tilt of the planet, that make the seasons. With Demeter for summer, in the Underworld for winter.
