During the Middle Ages, the great majority of people were peasant farmers. Most of these were serfs, though in some places there were slaves, and some of the farmers were free and owned their own land.

Serfs were neither free nor slaves. They could not be bought or sold. They were bound to the land of the manor they lived on, and had both an obligation and a right to live there. This meant that they could not move away without permission of their lord, but the lord could not make they move away if they did not want to go. They paid rent in the form of labor, a portion of the crop, or money, but the lord was obliged to allow them to farm the land, to have homes on it, and protect them in times of unrest or famine. In some places, they were organized by a reeve, who was either chosen from them by their lord or elected by themselves. Aside from their obligations, they were pretty much free.
