Coronation, from the Latin Corona- crown. This is almost always a religious ceremony. Charlemagne was crowned by the Pope in AD 800 ( on Christmas Day). Napoleon likewise, It stands to reason that in the seat of the Roman Catholic church the reigning monarchs would be crowned by the Pope, also.( Kings Victor Emmanuel and Humberto, Queens Margherita and Elena, of Italy. It was always considered a sacerdotal, litl priestly or sacred rite- Even in Russia- Anastasia, by the Grace of God, Czarina of all this Russias- which she never formally was!- preferring the more modest rank of Grand Duchess, equivalent to Crown Princess. Unlike the movies, Anastasia WA snever crowned as Czarina, she had smaller, Grand Ducal headgear, as a princess, of course, and wore them in and around the Kremlin Winter Palace.
