Generally speaking, qualitative research seeks opinions - rate product X from 1 to 5 for (some aspect of it), while quantitative research seeks use/frequency - do you use product X. Quantitative research asks people who they will vote for, qualitative research askes them why they will vote that way.

The important part is determining whether qualitative research will answer your specific questions. Usually it is used for hypothesis generation and getting an in-depth understanding of how and people people do things. Some basic questions might be "Why do people like product A more than product B" or "What are the different ways that people use product C."
